Genshin Impact began the next phase of their drip marketing yesterday, announcing the next three Sumeru characters: Cyno, Candace and Nilou, but apparently the internet has decided one of them plays YuGiOh.
Candace, described as the Guardian of Aaru Village by the Genshin Impact social media accounts has a noticable icon on her headgear, that closely resembles the same Eye of Horus-inspired motif used in the YuGiOh anime for the Millennium Items.
Combined with the rest of her Egyptian-themed appearance, the internet has had a field day imagining her as the type of character who’d engage in deathly battles of a children’s card game.
Some of these artists even went out of their way to redraw Candace in the signature edgy YuGiOh style:

Meanwhile, others realized that that might not be a shield she’s carrying- it’s just about the right size for a duel disk

Of course, with any new character, that also means speculating about their potential kit, and Candace was no different.
One such artist assumed that her Elemental Burst would call upon the power of her heritage with Exodia, The Forbidden One:

Genshin Impact’s drip marketing has been one of many great successes on Hoyoverse’s part- with the characters being further away on the release schedule, it gives players plenty of time to draw their own conclusions and get excited for future banners.
While most of the time those conclusions are rarely more than “Character hot“, the idea of the self-proclaimed tech otakus of miHoYo having their work mashed up with one of the most iconic anime of the late 90s is a good sign of Genshin Impact’s place in anime culture.
That being said, it’s not entirely smooth sailing for Candace fans in Genshin Impact- many more fans have also been critical of her design, particularly noting colorist tropes with characters that clearly sport an Egyptian motif sporting a light tan at best.
