Bungie has officially unveiled the first gameplay footage and key details for Marathon, announcing a September 24, 2025 release date for the revival of its classic franchise.
Described as a “team-based extraction shooter,” Marathon will put players in the role of Runners – mercenaries who have traded their human forms for biosynthetic shells with unique abilities and stats. In addition, teams of three will compete against up to 18 other players in each zone as they scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV.
The core gameplay loop revolves around collecting valuable loot and successfully extracting with it. If a team is eliminated, their hard-earned items become available for other players to claim. While squad play is emphasized, Bungie has confirmed solo play options will be available, though they warn this approach will be significantly more challenging.
Additionally, players interested in getting an early look can sign up for the closed alpha test beginning April 23 through Marathon’s Discord server. Marathon is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. In a player-friendly move, Bungie has confirmed cross-platform play without requiring a PlayStation Network account for non-PlayStation users. Sources indicate Bungie and Sony are considering a $40 price point for the game.

Moreover, the project has seen leadership changes, with former Valorant game director Joe Ziegler taking over as Marathon’s game director in March 2024. This follows reports that previous director Christopher Barrett left the company amid allegations of inappropriate behavior.
