Nintendo has officially confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will not include the game’s expansion pass DLC, which will remain available as a separate purchase.
In a statement provided to IGN, Nintendo clarified: “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase.”
The expansion pass, includes two DLC packs – The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad. Players who already own the expansion pass for the original Switch version will be able to use this content with the Switch 2 Edition without repurchasing.
This announcement comes as part of Nintendo’s broader reveal of Switch 2 Editions – enhanced versions of Nintendo Switch titles optimized for the upcoming console. Breath of the Wild’s Switch 2 Edition will feature several technical improvements, including enhanced resolution, improved frame rates, and HDR support.
Additionally, both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Editions will introduce a new Zelda Notes feature, allowing players to access the game map, achievements, and other functions via their mobile devices.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers will receive the Switch 2 Edition upgrades for both Zelda titles as part of their subscription, while other players can purchase them separately. Nintendo has also confirmed that Switch 2 Edition physical releases will contain both the base game and the upgrade on the cartridge itself, addressing concerns about potential download requirements.
