Following yesterday’s teaser on Twitter, Lionsgate has released the full trailer for the Borderlands movie, directed by horror splatter Hostel and Cabin Fever director Eli Roth.
The official trailer, as attached below, showcases the witty tone of the Borderlands movie as well as provides us with our first hearing of Jack Black’s voice for the talkative robot mascot Claptrap.
The movie adaptation of Borderlands stars an ensemble cast featuring The Lord of the Rings Lady Galadriel actress Cate Blanchett as protagonist Lilith and comedian-actor Kevin Hart as Roland.
We also see Avengers: Infinity War star Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, and boxer Florian Munteanu as Krieg.
The synopsis of the film is as follows, via Lionsgate Films:
Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.
The film is, of course, based on the space Western comedy science fiction series by developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K.
Borderlands is a critically acclaimed and influential franchise known for being one of the earliest looter shooters, with more than 77 million copies of the first game shipped in November 2022.
The franchise went on to spawn many spin-off titles including the graphic adventure game Tales from the Borderlands by Telltale Games.
The Eli Roth-directed adaptation was first announced in 2015, with Ari and Avi Arad of Arad Productions producing the film, but filming only officially began in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
