At the gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live, Blizzard Entertainment took the stage to showcase some of its most exciting upcoming releases and content updates. Johanna Faries, President of Blizzard Entertainment, kicked off the presentation by celebrating Warcraft’s 30th anniversary. She announced that the highly anticipated World of Warcraft: The War Within will be launching in just a few days, on August 26, with early access beginning on August 22.
Faries also revealed that a Warcraft Direct, where the teams will share more about the future of the franchise, is planned for the end of the year. Additionally, in-game events celebrating World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary will begin at the end of October, allowing players to explore the rich history of Azeroth while earning special rewards.
Blizzard also showcased at gamescom 2024 the upcoming in-game collaboration between Overwatch 2 and the World of Warcraft universe, set to arrive in September. As part of this collaboration, Overwatch 2 will introduce a new skin for Widowmaker, where she embraces her allegiance to the Horde as Sylvanas Windrunner.
On the Diablo IV front, Brent Gibson, the game director for Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, joined Faries on stage to unveil the Mercenaries Reveal trailer. The trailer showcased the new Mercenary feature, which will allow players to fight alongside ordinary people with extraordinary skills. The Vessel of Hatred expansion, set to launch on October 8, will also introduce the Kurast Undercity, a new multistage dungeon, and the Dark Citadel, a new co-op PvE dungeon.
Blizzard’s presence at gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live was a true celebration of the company’s iconic franchises. Fans can look forward to a wealth of new content and experiences across Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo in the coming months.
