In what can only be described as a golden year for Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs), 2024 has delivered an extraordinary lineup that spans from groundbreaking remakes to innovative new titles that showcase the best of the genre. The genre has proven itself more vibrant than ever, shattering the notion that turn-based games are outdated.

The game perfectly balances its serious narrative with signature Yakuza-style humor, while its innovative turn-based combat keeps players engaged with unique positioning mechanics.

FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth has continued Square Enix’s ambitious reimagining of the beloved classic, expertly blending action and turn-based elements. While PS5 exclusive for now, PC players can look forward to joining the adventure in 2025.  Square Enix’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has breathed new life into the 1988 classic using the gorgeous HD-2D visual style, while maintaining its influential traditional combat system. The extensive character customization options make it more accessible than ever for modern audiences.

FANTASIAN Neo Dimension made its way from mobile to major platforms, bringing its unique diorama-based visuals and innovative “bowling-style” combat system to a broader audience. The game stands out for its creative approach to turn-based combat mechanics. ATLUS has made an incredible showing this year with not one but three major releases. Persona 3 Reload brought the 2006 classic into the modern era with stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals, while Metaphor: ReFantazio impressed with its high-fantasy setting and refined combat system.
