How have you been enjoying MARVEL Super War, the Marvel-themed MOBA? There’s been plenty of Super Heroes, with more surely to come, from the most popular and recognizable faces, to perhaps some surprises from deep within the Marvel vault. Hela is the most recent Super Hero released, surely a boon for her fans, and for those who don’t know her yet, they’re about to find out.
We had the opportunity for an email interview with the development team behind the game, who has been working to provide content and, of course, new Super Heroes! Let’s see what these behind-the-scenes heroes have to answer to our questions.
At the point when we sent in the questions, Pixie was a newly released hero in the Support Class, probably the archetype with the fewest heroes by far. In the current season, we asked if they would be adding more heroes in the other Classes as time goes on. Indeed, as you might have already realized, they now have added the Black Knight (Dane Whitman) in the Fighter Class and Hela for Energy. They also revealed that a new hero will be released every two weeks if there’s no “special arrangement”.
Usually, we will release a new hero every two weeks if we don’t have a special arrangement.
Naturally, we also needed to ask how they decide the Classes of these heroes (e.g. Fighter, Energy, Marksman, Assassin, Tank, Support). Take Iron Man for example, who could reasonably fit in the Tank and Marksman archetypes with his suits, but he’s pure Energy in MARVEL Super War. The answer? The Classes are decided according to their original depictions in the comics, in combination with their recognizable characteristics and impressions they have left. They pick the Class that would make the most sense in the most faithful portrayal of the character.
As such, using Iron Man as an example again, he is a genius inventor and the backbone of the Avengers, providing sustained and powerful help for the team. They reflect his fighting style in-game with the Uni-Beam fired from the chest, flexible land and flight switching and such. When keeping in mind the ability to deal damage and to help their teammates as needed, the team then determined that the Energy Class is the best fit for him based on those capabilities.
Related to that, Marvel characters pretty much already have their powers well established. Nevertheless, the development team has to both design the characters according to the gameplay, while making them feel authentic. As such, they’ve implemented the characters accordingly to their lore:
- Hulk can bolt towards an enemy and perform shoulder smashes in succession
- Loki can disguise himself as anyone, even the unstoppable Fire Giant Surtur
- Groot becomes Baby Groot when KO’d and can roam the battlefields without taking damage until he resurrects into his mature form
- Deadpool has his characteristic bouncy gait and his death counter will always be 0 no matter how many times he’s been KO’d
In that case, characters like Magneto and Hulk would be, in canon, immune to conventional weapons and martial arts, yet characters with no super powers, like Black Widow, can take them down. Basically, MARVEL Super War acknowledges its roots, but also establishes that it is a “completely new and unique universe” with an independent world view. Parallel universes collide and each of these Super Heroes are fighting to reestablish the peace and stability of their own universe, bringing with them their unique combat advantages to this battlefield.
Black Widow, in this case, is faster, more agile and flexible than Hulk. With the use of her high tech equipment, she can then be powerful enough to take down the incredible powerhouse. The developers would like to impress the importance of teamwork in the game, with matches not decided by any one Super Hero. The characters working together to take down a foe is “the charm of this MARVEL MOBA game”.
Additionally in MARVEL Super War, the endings for all the matches are not decided by one single hero. It’s all about teamwork. Black Widow can gank Magneto with the help of her teammate such as Iron Man, and Hulk may also be KO’d under the attacks from Hawkeye and Mantis. This is the charm of this Marvel MOBA game.
Thanos is also available in MARVEL Super War, and as fans after watching the movies or reading the comics, realize he is incredibly powerful. Yet, he is still mortal in the realms of the game itself. The development team of the game has recreated the process of collecting the Infinity Stones that has captivated Marvel fans. It’s balanced in a way that even though Thanos and the Stones are incredibly powerful, players will still need to farm carefully to upgrade their powers, nor can they have all the Stone powers at the same time, asking players to make the right decisions in order to win.
Regarding future plans, the development team is currently working on in-game tournament systems and micro match systems since the first proper MARVEL Super War tournament in Thailand. Once they have optimized these features and plans for fun and convenience for competitive players, they hope to show it off to the players.
They also hear your calls for Wolverine, which they ask for you to stay tuned on their official fanpages once more information is available. Considering how many characters there are, it might be fair to ask for them to introduce more than one Super Hero every two weeks, but then again, we won’t know just how much work goes into creating these characters and bringing them to life!
For the time being, let’s keep an eye out for your popular, and lesser known, heroes to have their incarnations be added to the game. Who do you want to see next? The developers are listening, so make your voices heard!
