After an exhilarating global journey, Attack On Titan: The Final Exhibition is finally making its Malaysian stop. Naturally, we took the chance to take a first look at the exhibition and experience what it has to offer first hand.
Even before we got to the second floor of Fahrenheit88, there was a giant Titan Eren on full display on the ground floor of the mall, a tantalizing teaser for what the real deal had in store.
Right outside the first station, we were greeted by Mikasa and her fellow trainee corps with the iconic pose, ‘Shinzo Wo Sasageyo!’. Upon stepping into the exhibition, you will get an event brochure, and a reminder to collect nine stamps across the venue while you relive the manga series, with each station containing 1 stamp. At the entrance, you will have some prologue summary of the Attack On Titan story, after which you are free to walk into station 1.
Behind and Beyond the Walls
Featuring a grand opening theatre with a large screen, visitors are given a choice between experiencing life outside the wall (from Reiner Braun’s perspective) or inside the wall (from Eren Yeager’s perspective). Of course, there’s no need to worry too much about this choice as you can easily view the other side once you’re done with the first one.
Both sides show iconic manga scenes from their childhoods in the same timeline, with both ending in the scene where Bertholdt Hoover transforms into the Colossal Titan and destroys Wall Maria, but narrated from different perspectives.
Attempting to go to the next station ended with us getting genuinely jumpscared by a titanic replica of the Colossal Titan’s head peeking over the wall. Once we remembered that our life was not in any real danger, we took some photos with it before moving on to the next station.
Moving on, we were greeted by a museum-style gallery displaying various props from the manga, now rendered in realistic materials and dimensions. Some outstanding displays include Mikasa’s iconic scarf, a book that talks about the outside world and the Survey Corps’ cloak.
Witness Battles in a New Light
In the fourth station, attendees can engage in two animated manga scenes in a unique 2D mini-theatre experience, complemented by 3D props, offering a visceral insight into the intensity of the series’ battles. The scenes feature Eren fighting in his titan form, first against Reiner as the Armoured Titan, and the latter against the Warhammer Titan.
It takes approximately 7 minutes to watch both battles, but is truly worth it for the unique experience.
The Best of the Manga
After the show, attendees will be treated to a gallery showing introductions for the various characters in the manga. Beside all the main characters like Eren, Mikasa and Armin, other side characters like Hans, Zoe and Zeke Yaeger get their chance to shine in the highlight, and even beloved characters like Sasha and Corlin are here.
In this exhibition, you will get to see the entirety of the manga’s grand finale, mostly consisting of pages from the final chapter of the manga (or the 4th season of the anime).
After that, you will get to see an exclusive recording of an interview with author Hajime Isayama alongside a bunch of sketches and drafts. These interviews and sketches let us have a glimpse into how Hajime Isayama sensei first designed the Attack on Titan manga.
The last station greets us with dioramas of several iconic scenes spanning across the entire room. It even comes with its own hole in the wall so you can pretend to be a titan and recreate a certain scene from the manga.
At the end of our journey, we turn in our fully filled stamp sheet and are awarded an honorary certificate for either the Scouts Regiment, the Garrison Regiment, or the Military Police Regiment to officiate the training completion ceremony. It’s a one-of-a-kind way to interact with your favorite Attack On Titan moments – join the training, collect the stamps, and join the battle to keep Paradis Island safe.
Have a Snack While The World Burns
A collaboration cafe will open to coincide with the opening of Attack on Titan: The Final Exhibition Malaysia. Featuring an exhibition-only menu, it focuses on refreshments that are not to be missed.
Sadly, I didn’t get to try their food as it was not open when I arrived so I can’t give the verdict if it is worth it or not.
Official Merchandise
There is a merchandise area at the exhibition with a lineup of original merchandise. The price is comparable to other anime merchandise, and while it may seem expensive, the value it brings makes it well worth the investment. After experiencing the world of “Attack on Titan”, attendees are able to check out the merchandise making their Malaysian debut; an opportunity not to be missed! They also offer a photo booth experience priced at RM25 per sheet, providing a wonderful opportunity to capture lasting memories of your visit.
The café and merchandise area are open to all visitors, even those who haven’t purchased tickets for the exhibition.
Impressions
As an Attack on Titan fan, I believe RM55 is a fantastic deal for what the exhibition offers. It’s not just about showcasing manuscript replicas, but also interactive activities, theatres to watch, and a thematic presentation that takes you through the entire journey of the manga series. The use of animated manga scenes effectively conveys the emotions of the story, making it a truly immersive experience from start to finish.
The main theater was definitely my favorite. Despite being just 7 minutes long, those two scenes are absolutely fantastic. The merchandise area did not have much merchandise to buy, with some being on the expensive side, but the value is still worth it.
