Attack on Titan Final Season will only comprise of an uncommon figure of 16 episodes, as confirmed by the anime’s official website.
Initially, the website only revealed that two Blu-ray volumes consisting of 16 episodes would be sold, covering the entirety of the season finale. Now, the website was updated to confirm that figure once more.
16 is a rare number when it comes to anime season length. Modern anime series are typically made up of 1 to 2 “cours”, with the number of episodes in a cour ranging between 10 to 14. The previous season featured 22 episodes and covered two arcs, “Uprising”, and “Return to Shiganshina”, totalling to 40 manga chapters. Attack on Titan Final Season also adapts two arcs, but has to condense the story into a shorter 16 episode limit.
The Final Season has aired 4 episodes so far at the time of writing, with the season premiere on December 7th last year. Overall, fans have received the first 4 episodes with great positivity. With 12 more to go, only time will tell if the rest of the season can rise to meet the audience’s growing expectation or fall like Wall Maria.
