In this comprehensive ASUS TUF Gaming A14 review, we’ll delve into the intricacies, examining its design, performance, display quality, thermal management, and overall user experience. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of whether this lightweight powerhouse is the right choice to elevate your gaming and productivity endeavors.

The gaming laptop market has seen a steady evolution, with manufacturers constantly pushing the boundaries of performance and portability. Amidst this landscape, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 emerges as a remarkable mid-range offering that seeks to redefine the standards for 14-inch gaming laptops.

      Appearance and Design

The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 (FA401W-VRG021W, JAEGER GRAY) boasts a slim profile of just 16.9mm and weighs only 1.46kg, making it an exceptionally portable 14-inch gaming laptop. Its design follows a minimalist and understated aesthetic, featuring an aluminum top cover and bottom panel. This model comes with the narrowest bezels in the TUF series, measuring only 4mm at the top and 7mm on the sides, resulting in a screen-to-body ratio of up to 88%. This gives the laptop a modern and immersive look, with the display taking center stage.

The keyboard and palm rest are made of plastic, while the bottom and outer cover are aluminum, which gives the laptop a somewhat less premium feel compared to all-metal designs. Interestingly, ASUS has relocated the four LED indicators to the back of the system, unlike most laptops that place them near the power button. This means the indicators can only be seen from behind, which isn’t very useful when you’re in front of the screen. It’s worth noting that the laptop can be opened to a full 180 degrees for versatile usage angles. However, the surface of the device tends to attract unsightly fingerprints, making the overall design appear somewhat bland.

      Camera and Audio

The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 features a 1080P FHD camera and is the first TUF laptop to include an IR infrared camera that supports Windows Hello facial recognition. This addition ensures convenient and secure login for users. The laptop is also equipped with two high-performance speakers, Dolby Atmos sound, and Hi-Res audio, providing an exceptional audio experience for gaming, music, and movies.

The dual AI noise-cancellation technology further enhances the audio quality, guaranteeing clear communication during calls and allowing users to focus on the thrilling moments of gaming. However, the audio performance during music playback and movie watching tends to be flat and does not meet expectations for sound quality, lacking the depth and richness that some users may desire.

      Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 has a key travel of 1.7mm, with slightly pronounced curves on the keys that provide a good tactile feel. It also includes dedicated hotkeys for volume control, microphone mute, and quick access to Armory Crate for system settings adjustment. The laptop features a Copilot key that allows for one-click access to the AI assistant, further enhancing the user experience.

Despite the low contrast between the font and the black keycaps, the issue can be effectively resolved by toggling the backlight. The standard configuration includes single-zone white backlighting, differing from the RGB options available on most other gaming laptops. The keyboard provides good feedback, ensuring a smooth and responsive typing experience.

The A14 is the first TUF laptop with a glass touchpad. At 127 x 79mm, it’s as large as it could possibly be on this compact 14-inch chassis, while maintaining a 16:10 aspect ratio. The glass touchpad provides a very smooth gliding experience, with only a slight stickiness at slower speeds, which actually helps make clicking and dragging more precise. This design greatly enhances efficiency and comfort for everyday office tasks and creative work, making the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 a versatile laptop that can handle a wide range of user needs.

      I/O Ports and Connectivity

The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 is equipped with a comprehensive selection of I/O ports to accommodate various connectivity needs. It includes a 3.5mm combo audio jack and an HDMI 2.1 FRL port for high-quality audio and video output. For data transfer, there are two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, supporting speeds of up to 10Gbps. Additionally, it has a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort support, offering the same data speed of up to 10Gbps.

The laptop also features a high-speed USB 4 Type-C port with support for DisplayPort, power delivery, and data transfer rates up to 40Gbps, which is ideal for connecting to external GPUs or high-resolution monitors. Lastly, the TUF Gaming A14 includes a microSD card reader with UHS-II support, enabling transfer speeds of up to 312MB/s, making it highly versatile for users needing flexible and fast data access.

Regarding wireless connectivity, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6E technology, designed for efficient and lag-free gaming and work on the go. This advanced wireless solution ensures a stable and reliable connection, further enhancing the laptop’s versatility and performance.

      Display and Performance

The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 boasts an impressive 2.5K (2560×1600) display with a refresh rate of 165Hz and a during the review a response time of just 3 milliseconds. This high-quality panel covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut, ensuring vibrant and true-to-life color representation. Additionally, the display features NVIDIA G-SYNC technology, effectively reducing latency and screen tearing for a smoother gaming experience.

With a 16:10 aspect ratio and an 88% screen-to-body ratio, the visual experience on the TUF Gaming A14 is immersive and engaging. The combination of the high-resolution, high-refresh-rate display and NVIDIA G-SYNC technology provides a significant advantage for gamers, delivering crisp, fluid, and responsive visuals that can truly showcase the potential of the laptop’s hardware.

Under the hood, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 is powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen AI series processors, specifically the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. This laptop also features an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card, ensuring smooth and high-quality gaming performance. The device supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5X 7500 dual-channel memory, allowing for efficient multitasking and seamless gaming without any noticeable stuttering or frame drops.

      Thermal Management and Battery Life

Despite its compact and lightweight design, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 features a large 73WH battery, which, combined with the efficient AMD Ryzen AI processor, offers up to 18 hours of video playback. In everyday tasks or web browsing, the laptop’s battery life exceeds standard needs, making it a reliable companion for users on the go.

Regarding cooling, the TUF Gaming A14 is equipped with an effective thermal management system that keeps the device stable during high-load gaming sessions, allowing users to focus without significant distractions over extended gameplay. The laptop features extra-large cutouts below the keyboard keycaps, allowing the fans to draw in cool fresh air right through the keyboard, and then guide it over the mainboard and heatsink fin array to effectively exhaust the heat. This design ensures optimal performance and temperature control, even under demanding conditions.

      Game Testing and Performance

To evaluate the gaming performance of the ASUS TUF Gaming A14, we selected three popular games for the review: Metaphor: ReFantazio, Black Myth: Wukong, and Apex Legends. We also used MSI Afterburner to monitor the laptop’s performance during the tests.

In Black Myth: Wukong, running the game on high graphics settings, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 delivered a satisfactory performance. While the cutscenes showed occasional stuttering, the actual gameplay maintained a stable frame rate of 70-80 FPS, providing players with a smooth experience. Even during intense combat scenes where the frame rate briefly dipped to 65 FPS, the overall fluidity remained unaffected.

When playing Metaphor: ReFantazio on high graphics settings, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 showcased commendable performance. Cutscenes ran smoothly without stuttering, with the frame rate locked at 120 FPS, and the Texture Quality set to High, providing players with rich, detailed visuals. During combat scenes, the frame rate occasionally dipped to 104 FPS, and in exploration areas, it sometimes dropped to 90 FPS. Despite these minor fluctuations, the game’s overall smoothness remained intact, ensuring an immersive experience.

In Apex Legends, on high graphics settings, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 demonstrated solid overall performance. The GPU temperature held steady at 73°C—though slightly on the high side, it’s well-managed, with the chassis warming up only moderately. The cooling system effectively controls temperature fluctuations, ensuring stable frame rates. The game ran at a steady 100-115 FPS, which is ideal for a fast-paced shooter like Apex Legends. In the most intense combat situations, the frame rate briefly dropped to 95 FPS, but this minor dip did not impact the gameplay experience significantly.

      Verdict

The ASUS TUF Gaming A14 (FA401W-VRG021W) is a groundbreaking mid-range gaming laptop, especially noteworthy as the first 14-inch model in the TUF lineup, weighing just 1.46 kg. This impressive portability makes it an ideal choice for gamers on the move, combining powerful performance, durability, and a lightweight design. While the slim 16.9mm profile enhances its portability, the rear LED indicators and tendency to attract fingerprints are minor design drawbacks that don’t significantly detract from the overall user experience.

Performance-wise, the laptop features an AMD Ryzen 9 HX 370 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, ensuring smooth gaming and efficient multitasking. Its 2.5K display, coupled with a 165Hz refresh rate and NVIDIA G-SYNC, provides a vibrant and immersive gaming experience. However, the audio system is somewhat flat for music and movies, though it suffices for gaming.

In summary of our review, the ASUS TUF Gaming A14 is an excellent option for gamers seeking a reliable and lightweight laptop. While it may not rival high-end gaming rigs, its combination of portability, solid performance, and high-quality display offers great value in the mid-range market, making it a standout choice for gamers who prioritize mobility without sacrificing capability.
