Immortals of Aveum developer, Ascendant Studios, has laid off approximately 45% of their staff following the release of the game.
Bret Robins, the CEO of Ascendant Studios, has announced on Twitter that the studio has decided to lay off about half of its staff in a painful, but necessary decision.
“This was a painfully difficult, but necessary decision that was not made lightly – nevertheless, we have to make this adjustment now that Immortals of Aveum has shipped” he said.
Immortals of Aveum was the first title made by the independent studio.
“I am so proud of what our independent development team has accomplished with Immortals of Aveum. Together we’ve created a new AAA studio, a new IP, on new technology, during an era of our industry when that is exceedingly rare.” Robins said.
According to a report by Polygon, the reason for the layoffs were due to the poor performance of the game.
The game has suffered from poor sales and the lack of an active playerbase.
According to Gamalytic, there were only 12.3k total copies sold for Immortals of Aveum on Steam.
For comparison, BIOMUTANT, a game on a similar scale to Immortals of Aveum sold a total of 244k copies within a similar time frame.
SteamDB shows that the game peaked at just under 800 Steam players shortly after its launch.
