Genshin Impact has posted a preview on the rewards that players can expect through community events for the upcoming one year anniversary. One’s generous interpretation of the community response to it is… less than ideal at best. I can tell all of you that it’s a “preview”, but even so, that doesn’t make a difference. Let’s go through this in steps.
THE REWARDS
The community events overview is given as follows:
EVENT NAME | EVENT DURATION | EVENT REWARDS |
---|---|---|
"An Unforgettable Journey" Web Event | September 28 – October 12 | Primogems, Mora, Mystic Enhancement Ore, Hero's Wit |
"A Message in Time" Web Event | September 29 – October 7 | 10%: 1 x Blessing of the Welkin Moon. 90%: 100,000 x Mora |
Anniversary Congratulatory Art Repost Prize Giveaway | September 25 – September 29 | 3 x iPhone 13 Pro Max, share for cash prize raffle |
Genshin Impact Anniversary Event "Recording Your Anniversary Memories" | September 28 – October 7 | 1000: 100 x Primogems |
Genshin Impact Anniversary Event "Let's Solve Word Puzzles" | October 7 – October 13 | 1000: 100 x Primogems |
"The Promise of a Worldly Encounter" Cosplay Submission Contest | September 22 – October 20 | Primogems, Apple AirPods, Razor DeathAdder V2, Fateful Gift Series Merchandise Set (Random Character) |
The fact that most of these are raffle rewards and the difference in value of the prizes is personally quite the throwback to Granblue Fantasy‘s lottery debacle. Players have also pointed out that even if you do get the 100 Primogems prize from some of these, it’s still insufficient for a single Wish (160 Primogems).
THE RESPONSE
It looks like the player base is wondering about the apparent lack of in-game activities, saying that miHoYo is too busy focusing on events on other platforms, the postponed real life events presumably being one of these.
The international fanbase’s comments aren’t much better, decrying the developer as greedy and stingy for not giving out better rewards. There are others who remind the rest not to blame the developers, and instead point the finger at the executives. Either way though, putting all the colourful comments here will do no favours besides indicating that, yes, people are not happy. Even if you do have the ability for the other events for the “bigger” rewards – e.g. cosplay – not all participants will get the prizes anyway.
THE RESOLUTION? (Editorial)
As I mentioned in the beginning, you can explain this by saying it’s just a “preview”. “The real rewards will come later,” some might assure you. I’m really not sure if I want to have hope in that.
Let’s return to the Granblue Fantasy comparison. It took about a day for Cygames to provide a placating prize, which some would say wasn’t enough to provide equity to players. If we apply this to Genshin, the bare minimum would be to give everyone the 100 Primogems. An equivalent for the Welkin Moon raffle would probably be to give all players maybe 800 Primogems, since you can get roughly 10 Wishes over the month of that.
The game is still earning a lot, by now most probably hitting the $2 billion revenue mark since this Sensor Tower spotlight. “Surely they can afford to be more generous?”, a sentiment many echo. If the community is loud enough, will they announce changes? Is me trying to lowball still “too much”? Are the players truly entitled, asking for more? I don’t think they are.
I doubt anyone would like to sour what should be a celebratory occasion with unpleasant remarks towards a game, that for all intents and purposes, is incredibly well made and can be considered a new standard for games moving forward. One supposes there’s not much else to do but to make your voices heard, for whichever “side” you want to be on.
