Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai was featured in a special interview with Famitsu (translated by VGC), wherein he talked about the future of the game following the final DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
“I’m not thinking about a sequel,” Sakurai told Famitsu. “But I can’t say that this is definitely the last Smash Bros.”
“I need to think about whether we should release another Smash Bros game at the risk of disappointing the users.”
Admittedly, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is a tough act to follow. It contains every previous Smash character to have ever existed, including the ones that were guests from other series such as Solid Snake from Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII.
“If Smash Bros. continues in the future, then there’s no way this many fighters and series can be represented again. There are still requests from all over the world for new fighters in Smash.”, he said in a previous interview.
In this week’s interview, Sakurai also contemplated the possibility of Smash Bros continuing without him.
“I can’t see any way to produce Smash Bros. without me,” he said. “To be honest, I’d like to leave it to someone else, and I’ve actually tried that, but it hasn’t worked out.”
He continued: “If we’re going to continue with the series, Nintendo and I need to discuss and seriously consider how to make it a success.”
