RPGs (role-playing games) have spawned various subgenres of late, like JRPG (Japanese role-playing game) and ARPG (action role-playing game). This week’s issue of the GamerBraves Newsletter explores the growth and subsequent overlapping between these two subgenres of RPG.
Nowadays, almost any game can be classified as an ARPG. Simply take traditional RPG elements and put them into an action game, and it can be argued that that is now an ARPG. As for JRPG, developers need not be Japanese to make a traditional turn-based combat-styled game with all the hallmarks of a JRPG.
These awkward classifications aside, is the JRPG subgenre “dying”? Will there still be a market for JRPG even after the rise of the sheer amount of ARPG nowadays? You can hear our thoughts on this by reading our newsletter!
