This week, we explore the volatile and seedy world of online video game economies. Skins, items, accounts—you name it, there’s a price to it.
It’s common knowledge that gamers will spend money on things like in-app purchases, battle passes, and DLC. However, in extremely popular online games like DOTA 2 and CS: GO with virtual markets that let players trade in-game items and skins for real world money, prices can reach astronomical figures.
Similarly, in MMORPGs, developers have to carefully construct and manage how currency is being handled as a whole. Inflation, market crashes and other problems that exist in the real world are mirror images in many of these virtual economies, with economists even using games as economic models.
