The Nintendo Switch has sold over 89 million units worldwide

A new financial report from Nintendo has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 89 million units worldwide. This makes it the 7th best selling video game console of all time surpassing the PS3, Xbox 360, 3DS and PSP.

These numbers reflect the sales up to June 30th 2021. Since its release, the Switch has become the fastest-selling console of all time and has reportedly been the top-selling hardware of each month for almost of its entire life span. Japan in particular has a true affinity for the Switch to the point that it accounted for 87% of consoles in the country in 2020.

Nintendo also revealed the software sales of Switch games worldwide. Of recent Nintendo 1st party games, New Pokemon Snap has sold 2.07 million, Miitopia has sold 1.04 million and Mario Golf: Super Rush has sold 1.34 million. They’ve also given us an updated list of the best selling Switch games in the millions:

• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 37.08 units
• Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 33.89 units
• Super Smash Bros Ultimate – 24.77 units
• The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 23.20 units
• Pokemon Sword/Shield – 21.85 units
• Super Mario Odessey – 21.40 units
• Super Mario Party – 15.72 units
• Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee – 13.57 units
• Splatoon 2 – 12.45 units
• Ring Fit Adventure – 11.26 units

Nintendo’s Now Buying Back Shares

So you can see, Nintendo is pretty rolling in money. What are they doing with their money? Well, they’re buying their own shares.

Around the same time as the report, Nintendo also issued a “Notification of Acquisition of Treasury Shares and Cancellation of Treasury Shares”. This means that they want to buy back their own shares and cancel them. This means that they have fewer dividends that they are obliged to payout. Nintendo is willing to pay up to 912 million USD to buy these stocks. It sounds like a lot but I suppose from their perspective they’re saving money in the long run.

For fans, however, this doesn’t really mean a lot. Nintendo’s doing well so that they’ll probably keep making games. It’d be nice if they started fixing joy-con drift and their online service with all that money though.
