Modus games have announced Soulstice, a gothic-fantasy Hack n Slash that looks to draw a lot of inspiration from the late Kentaro Miura’s Berserk. It releases in 2022 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC.
The game has you playing as Briar and Lute, a Chimera seeking to reclaim the city of Ilden. We don’t know much about the world of the game, but we can assume the Chimera title has something to do with them being two beings- one a spirit and the other a knight, bound together.
Here’s the official description for Briar and Lute:
Briar and Lute are two sisters who have been reborn as a Chimera. The transformation has granted Briar superhuman strength and resilience, while Lute, who was sacrificed in order to bind her soul to her sister’s, has become a ghost with mystical powers. Voiced by Stefanie Joosten (Metal Gear Solid 5), Briar and Lute are sent on a mission to reclaim a city in ruins that has been ravaged by the Wraiths, only to discover that the Order they belong to has a far more complex plan in mind.
Combat has you controlling the two, using a variety of powerful melee moves as Briar swings around her weapon, and Lute attacks with otherworldly magic. Briar’s weapons can be swapped out as the game goes on, and you’ll even be able to swap between weapons mid combo to perform stylish combos a la Devil May Cry.
You’ll fight a variety of bosses too, taking on all manner of horrifying forms from large knights to arrow-firing beasts, which you’ll have to use your mastery of Briar and Lute’s skills to overcome.
It’s kind of an open secret that the game draws inspiration from Berserk, with Briar’s design looking incredibly similar to the Berserker armor worn by Guts. Similarly, Briar’s missing eye and singular armored arm also appear to be an homage to the iconic knight.
Considering other games like Miyazaki’s Souls mega-series drawing inspiration from Berserk, it’s no surprise- and many internet comments have voiced their support for the game specifically for its special aesthetic serving as a spiritual Berserk Game.
