The Vietnam Recreational and Electronic Sport Association (VIRESA) has announced the esports titles that will be used for the SEA Games 2021, with some games spanning multiple events.
According to the Viresa website (via esports News UK), the tournaments will consist of both PC and mobile games, with no console games at the tournament. Interestingly enough, Wild Rift will be split into two events, with one for Men and one for Women.
Here’s the full list of SEA Games 2021 esports events:
- Arena of Valor (Mobile)
- CrossFire (PC)
- FIFA Online 4 (PC)
- Free Fire (Mobile)
- League of Legends (PC)
- League of Legends: Wild Rift – Men (Mobile)
- League of Legends: Wild Rift – Women (Mobile)
- Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (Mobile)
- PUBG Mobile – Individual (Mobile)
- PUBG Mobile – Team (Mobile)
The events are focus on the most popular esports right now, with 4 MOBAs, 3 Battle Royales and one sports game being part of the event line-up. Notable missing genres are team shooters like Rainbow Six: Siege and Overwatch, or Sim racers like Gran Turismo or Forza Horizon. Fighting games are also notably missing, though the genre has always had a tenuous relationship with the greater esports umbrella.
This is a big step for esports’ road to broader recognition, since the SEA Games are very prestigious in the SouthEast Asia region. While no esports were planned to be at the delayed 2020 Japan Olympics, many fans have been asking if the International Olympic Committee would start to embrace esports at future events.
