In March 2015, Nexon and Square Enix formed a partnership to develop Final Fantasy XI R for the mobile, which was slated for release in 2016, but it was delayed for the longest time. Six years since the initial announcement for the reboot, it would appear that the game has been canned for real.
Rumours had started to float around December 2020 on the status of the game, suggesting that developed had ceased entirely. Looking at the screenshots that were released with a job posting for a developer for the game, Final Fantasy XI R appears to have been quite the looker, which should be the case, as it utilised the ever reliable Unreal Engine 4 for its graphics. Unfortunately, that is all we will ever see of the game, although not that big a loss, considering the original Final Fantasy XI is well and alive today.
