Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy Discord, the popular community messaging app. The company had previously acquired Skype ten years prior, back when it was the go-to platform for online calling.
Previously, VentureBeat had reported that Discord was in talks for a USD 10 Billion deal, though they hadn’t disclosed who they were talking to. Sources have told Bloomberg (via The Verge) that Microsoft was the interested suitor, joining the list of high-profile acquisitions by the mega company.
According to VentureBeat this deal is already in its final negotiations, with multiple sources telling them that paperwork had already been signed regarding the deal.
It’s no surprise Microsoft would try to buy Discord, the app previously reported over 140 million active users in December, and the company itself is valued at about USD 7 Billion. While many users jumped onto newer platforms like Zoom after last year’s pandemic, Discord already had an install base, as the app had been used by gamers and streamers thanks to its ability to host large calls.
Although Discord is free, it has a subscription based premium option, Discord Nitro. This doesn’t affect the core functions of Discord, but allows for more premium features and acts as the only source of revenue for the app, since it doesn’t serve ads.
