Square Enix has publicly trademarked Chocobo GP and Chocobo Grand Prix, leading fans to wonder if a beloved racing game could be on its way back.
Both names sound eerily familiar to Chocobo Racing, a racing game featuring its iconic yellow bird and various other Final Fantasy mainstays such as Black Mages and Moogles.
According to Gematsu, the trademark for Chocobo GP was filed in both English and Japanese, while they also filed an additional trademark for Chocobo Grand Prix in Japan. The trademarks have been filed since December 26th, but were only made public today. Additionally, they were also filed in Canada and Australia on February 26th, as well as March 1st in Europe.
If previous patterns are anything to go by, we could be seeing news about Chocobo GP soon. Previously, the trademarking of Ever Crisis and The First Soldier had gone public mere months before they were revealed at State of Play, so it’s not too farfetched to assume we could be getting news in the coming months.
Still, just like how fans speculated The First Soldier would be a spin-off about Sephiroth yet it turned out to be a Battle Royale game, it’s also important to keep your expectations in check.
