PS VR Confirmed for PS5

PlayStation announced today that a new iteration of PS VR, the Playstation VR hardware, would be coming to the PS5 system, though not any time this year.

According to the Playstation blog, the PS VR headset won’t be ready by 2021, and they didn’t even have concept photos to show of the new hardware. Instead, the blog post talks more about the goals of the hardware, highlighting how it intends to be different from the PS4 variant of the VR headset.

Rather than just make the old PS VR headset compatible with the PS5 hardware, the blog post hints that an all new peripheral will be made for the next-gen console, complete with its own controllers.

“We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience”, says Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning and Management.

He also teased that the controllers for the new PS VR would take cues from the Dualsense, incorporating some of its technology and more ergonomic design.

“One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences”, he says.
