IKEA, the world’s largest furniture retailer, made cardboard cutouts of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, improving customers’ experience.
What do these fake next-gen consoles have to do with people looking for furniture? Well, the cardboard cutouts (made to scale), help shoppers figure out if their new cabinet can actually fit the actual consoles. After all, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are massive in comparison to their previous-gen predecessors. The same storage unit which housed your PS4 may not be able to contain the PS5.
Garnering a great number of upvotes, this image was posted on Reddit by user u/TomaccoTastesLikeGma. Currently, the exact location of the IKEA store which displayed the cardboard cutouts remains unknown.
Obviously, the furniture retail giant did not explicitly state that the mock consoles are the PS5 or Xbox Series X most likely due to legal issues. Instead, IKEA took a jab at Sony text by calling the cardboard cutout a “new, meme-ishly oversized, gaming console”.
In all seriousness, this was a pretty ingenious move on IKEA’s part. In particular, the PS5 has been incredibly popular with stock shortages around the world. As gaming is getting bigger than ever, we are glad that the hobby is gaining relevance even outside the industry.
