Acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai is adding a new scene to the TV debut of his hit anime film Weathering With You, making reference to the themes of the movie and the year 2020.
According to Anime News Network, the premiere for the movie will feature a new minute long sequence, in which text overlaid on shots from the movie reflect on the title, Weathering With You, and the absolute state of 2020 for many people.
The clip will air during the portion in which Tv Asahi usually airs the sponsors of a film’s screening.
Weathering With You was named as such to reflect the themes of the movie, namely that of overcoming hardships with other people. Considering the movie deals with Tokyo overcome by a great disaster, it’s not too far-fetched to draw comparisons to the Covid-19 outbreak, and will surely tug at a lot of heartstrings.
The film is the second widely popular movie by Makoto Shinkai. It’s about a young boy who runs away from home to start a new life in Tokyo, where it always rains. Here he meets a girl with the strange power to pray for clear skies, and they embark on a journey together.
It’s the second of Makoto Shinkai’s popular films, following up after Your Name.
