As PS5 preorders open across Malaysia, people have gone to all their local game stores to try to get their hands on the new console. As of 2pm, 2 hours after many of these stores opened pre-orders, fans are finding that the next-gen console is sold out.
This isn’t particularly unusual, since the PS5 is incredibly in-demand. However, this has lead to a lot of frustration from netizens trying to enjoy the console’s boosted performance of PS4 games.
A lot of ire has been drawn towards two outlets in particular, CT Game Store and Gamer’s Hideout. While the PS5 Physical Edition has a suggested retail price of RM2299, both stores’ preorders has them at a significant markup.
CT Game Store opened their pre-orders days in advance of the PS5 regional pricing news. This is because rather than getting stock allocated for Malaysians, they were going to import stock earmarked for Hong Kong.
As a result, their price sits at a significantly higher markup, with the Digital Edition (retail price MYR 1899) totaling MYR 3999 instead. Similarly, the Physical Edition (retail price MYR 2299) has been marked up to MYR 4499.
The store’s Facebook page has not issued a statement since the announcement of Malaysian stock.
Gamer’s Hideout is also selling their PS5 pre-orders at a markup, although it’s not because they’re importing foreign stock. Instead, they’re making PS5 pre-orders part of a bundle, requiring you to buy several accessories on top of your console.
These include a PS4 copy of Cyberpunk 2077, as well as a “Mystery Adventure Game Pack” consisting 3 random games. Silicon cases for the Dualsense controller are also included with this bundle.
These all apply to the Physical Edition of the PS5, and comes out to MYR 3028.60.
This has drawn a lot of outrage from netizens, who feel like they are being taken for a ride by the game retailer.
Other retailers have also commented on the issue, taking jabs at Gamer’s Hideout for the PR blunder. In a reply to a comment, Impulse Gaming said bundles were “not [their] style”, prompting happy reactions from customers.
Impulse Gaming has allocated fixed stock to their various branches, all of which are sold out at time of writing. They have one more preorder going live on their Shopee at 3pm.
