Japan-based otaku culture publication Otapol did a report on recent games which have terminated their services, and the findings were a rather big surprise. Between the start of 2017 and mid-April 2017, there have been well over 100 smartphone games that have announced the end of their services.
Here is a small glimpse at the list of games as compiled by Hachima:
Onimusha Soul (Capcom)
The Asterisk War Festa Kirameki no Stella (Bandai Namco)
Aria ~Aqua Ritmo~ (BBB)
According to Otapol, for many of the games which failed, they abide by advertising trends using keywords such as “luxurious voice actors,” “simple touch,” “full-blown,” and “dramatic.” While there were some games which have lasted as long as seven years, many lasted for about six months at most.
Of course, this by no means that the smartphone game industry is in decline. Rather, with so many of them being launched, only the best of the best will survive.
