Sony surprised everyone with a blog post talking about the new PS5 Dualsense controller today. They also released a promotional video to better illustrate the features of the new controller.
The key features talked about in the blog post are as follows:
- Haptic Feedback
- Adaptive Triggers
- 3D Audio
Haptic Feedback
Haptic feedback is a higher-sensitivity form of vibration in the Dualsense controller. Compared to controllers which can only play with the speed or timing of the rumble, the Haptic Feedback can selectively vibrate different parts of the controller, to emulate different feelings. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was one of the examples given of a game that would use haptic feedback, along with Demon Souls: Remastered.
Adaptive Triggers
Adaptive triggers are a function that allow games to control the resistance when you pull the PS5’s triggers. These can vary from low resistance, allowing you to depress it fully- to a higher resistance, which can make pulling the triggers incredibly hard.
Deathloop is one of the games that plans to make use of this, to better emulate the feeling of the shooter’s guns jamming. Unsurprisingly, Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart also plans to use this feature for its guns.
3D Audio
3D Audio allows the games to give you a more immersive audio experience. While the technical aspects are hard to explain, it allows the user to experience sounds as if they were happening, rather than coming from a speaker. None of the games in the blog post explicitly mentioned 3D audio, but its safe to assume the ones talking about immersion are making use of it.
