Nintendo acknowledges hack of 160,000 network IDs

Following an internal investigation, Nintendo has come out to say that more than 160,000 user accounts have been compromised.

The company has requested that users activate two-factor authentication, while logging out from all devices, in addition to changing passwords. If you find your account has made purchases that you were unaware of, the company asks that you contact them to have it cancelled. Also, you might want to remove any saved payment options from the account.

With that out of the way, let us dive into what exactly what compromised. According to Twitter user Robert Sephazon who translated the official press release, private information had apparently been accessed by a third party. Details such as nicknames, date of birth, country of origin and email address were all leaked. Nintendo assures that no credit card information have been compromised.

Hacks of this nature is nothing new of course, since Sony encountered something similar a few years back. Unfortunate as it may be, it is the reality of things. One cannot know for sure what gets out there, but as a form of due diligence, always use strong passwords and have them changed often.
