Originally a trilogy of light novels penned by Gundam franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino himself, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash is being adapted into three movies, the first of which will air in Japan on 23 July 2020. Protagonist Hathaway Noa is being voiced by Kensho Ono.
For a bit of context, Tomino wrote the novels as a followup to Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack. They were published between 1989 and 1990, with the story set 12 years after the Second Neon Zeon War. Hathaway founded a terrorist organisation in response to the atrocities committed by the Earth Federation against its colonies. Standard Gundam fare. Side stories are nothing new to the Gundam universe, and it is always very interesting to see the overarching plot from a different perspective.
The anime adaptation was first announced in 2018 and was produced by Sunrise. The movies have been written by Yasuyuki Muto and are being directed by Shuko Murase. The first installment is to air in three months, although one would wonder if the ongoing coronavirus pandemic will affect the release times. Let us hope that things would get better by the time summer time hits. For more information and updates, be sure to drop by the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash official website.
