Trilz’s Captain America Guide
My Marvel Super War guides are back! This time, I’m covering everyone’s favorite hero in white, red and blue: Captain America!
Captain America plays just like what you’d expect from a leader. He is a supportive tank, that can deal decent damage while still soaking tons of damage. His kit is also quite straightforward so he’s easy to pick up!
Passive: Star of Freedom
His passive gives you a 35% movespeed buff for 4 seconds after casting your Skill 1. Then, your next attack will be a leaping strike that stuns for 0.75 seconds. The second part of his passive is that when he catches his shield, he gains an actual shield (heh) that absorbs damage and he can use his Skill 2 for free for about 3 seconds.
Skill 1: Shield Throw
His Skill 1 throws his shield forward, dealing damage and slow to the first target hit. The shield will bounce to second target after hitting the first target or an obstacle like a wall or a turret. If your shield hits at the end of the skillshot (see below), the target will take less damage and the slow will not be as strong either.
Skill 2: Liberty Rush
His Skill 2 will make him dash forward then deal two hits to a nearby enemy. Each hit also restores a bit of health. When you catch your shield, you can cast Skill 2 again for free within the next 3~4 seconds.
Ulti: Avenger Vanguard
Captain America’s ulti is what makes him good for a team. His ult has two parts. First, when you cast it on a target, you will charge to that target, deal damage then grab them into the air then slam them back down. The slam deals heavy damage to the target and knocks back other nearby enemies. During the charge you are CC-immune and you have 80% damage reduction until your ulti finishes casting. The second part of the skill leaves behind a trail of wind in the direction that Captain America charged. Allies that enter it get a 50% movement speed buff for 0.5 seconds. If your target dies within 3 seconds of this skill, you also get a huge movement speed buff for a moment.
Item Build
As per my usual disclaimer, these items are just suggestions. Each game will be different and who the biggest threat on the enemy team will be different. The build I am recommending will make you tanky while still being able to deal a moderate amount of damage. Your core items will be Stormbreaker and Starlight Armor. Stormbreaker is a great bruiser item that pairs well with your Skill 2, you can deal 4~5 hits quite quickly. Starlight Armor is the most important item for any tanky build. It makes it so that your HP contributes to your damage output.
The next two items should be a counter to the enemy team. If they have more energy damage, then get Cloak of Leviathan and Deathly Phantom (pictured above). If they have more physical damage, then get Captain America’s Shield (fitting!) and Glorious Armor. Top it off with a Megingjord to help you get back into the fight since you should be surviving most fights now.
Overall strategy, tips & tricks
For your skills, you definitely want to max your Skill 1. It reduces the cooldown and gives you more opportunity for you to proc your passive. There is no debate here, it is better for every situation. Even if you’re losing the early game and you think you can sustain better with Skill 2, the damage and healing you get per skill point is not good enough. Compare it to what you get to your Skill 1, which not only reduces coolodown on the skill itself, but let’s you get free movement speed buffs, stuns, free Skill 2 casts and shielding more often (from your passive).
1) Your Skill 1 can poke or start an all-in, but only pick ONE.
At first glance, you might think that the base damage dealt from a max range Shield Throw would be very low. In reality, you get the majority of your Skill 1’s damage from your Physical Attack stat. In reality, you’d be only losing out on about 100 damage for hitting a target at max range. And your max range is really long. You can use it to poke and back off with your passive movement speed.
Also, because of how important your Skill 1 is, you do NOT want to all-in without it. Without your passive, you don’t have your movement speed, your stun, your HP shield and your free Skill 2 cast. That is a LOT of stuff you’re losing out on. If your Shield Throw is on cooldown from poking, play it safe and back off.
2) You choose your team’s fights
Just like the real Captain, you have to be the leader for your team. You have to be aware of where your teammates are before picking a fight. To play Captain America, you also need to talk like Captain America. Communicate with your team to charge with you. Tell them to deal damage while you tank and stun. Also, mind your language.
Captain America’s Ulti is so good. It isolates your target (usually a squishy) one way or another. Either the enemy team don’t want to get hit by the slam damage and move away, or you knock them back after the slam. Also, during the attack, you take almost no damage. If you’re lucky, the enemy might waste a few skills and ultis on you during the damage reduction, which means you’d be soaking way more damage for your team.
Lastly, it helps your team engage or disengage. If your team is in a bad spot, you can cast your ultimate just to get them away safely. You’ll probably die, but you’ll die like a hero. That’s what Captain America would do.
3) Chasing and positioning
Captain America’s kit makes him very good at catching out of position enemies. You can throw your Skill 1 just for the movement speed boost. 4 seconds of 35% increased movement speed is nothing to scoff at, 4 seconds in MSW is actually really long. Chasing down targets isn’t too difficult for Captain America. You can also slow with your shield and you have one to two dashes, with your Skill 2, which makes your quite mobile. However, be careful to not bait yourself into the enemy team with the free Skill 2 cast after catching your shield. I’ve seen some players (myself included) dash into 3 people just because they wanted to use the free Skill 2 and died because of it.
Conclusion
Captain America is very well rounded. Although his ulti is a huge team fight skill, he can scout and traverse the map quickly if he needs to solo. He’s tanky and deals enough damage to threaten a target during a teamfight with his ult. He’s also one of the few tanky heroes with a reliable poke and has top tier mobility. Overall, he’s a great hero to pick up if you’re a Top or Jungle player.
