It’s 2020, and one of the first big rumours for the Playstation 5 is this supposed huge backwards compatibility feature. We haven’t gotten many details since the initial announcement last year other than the Holiday 2020 time frame. As Comicbook.com points out, there’s no price yet, and other than Godfall, we don’t know of other titles the console will have. Needless to say, the unknown factor goes for its type of backwards compatibility. However, HipHopGamer, via Comicbook.com, claims that Sony is working on a “Remastering Engine” for the PS5. This would allow PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles to run on the console with various enhancements.

The report claims this feature would be similar to the Xbox One X’s backwards compatibility. Namely, the PS5 will be able to run these older games, and add things like 4K support. This information is naturally unofficial so you can be skeptical. Comicbook.com adds that HipHopGamer has been a reliable source before even if he doesn’t divulge where he obtains the information.
Past Sony patents had hinted at such backwards compatibility in the Playstation 5. A system to add trophies to PS1 and PS2 games had also been patented, showing a certain investment in said backwards compatibility technology. We’ll have to wait and see how much of the rumour is true in the console itself.
Does this make you more excited for the console?
