Interview with Chris, Head of Esports and Marc, Head of Marketing from the SEA, Hong Kong and Taiwan Department!

During yesterday’s media gathering in Singapore, we had the chance to interview the two key people who will determine our region’s growth for League of Legends in the region of Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Here’s the two personnel who we will be talking to today!

• Chris Tran – Head of Esports for SEA, HK and TW
• Marc Johns – Head of Marketing for SEA, HK and TW

At first, we discussed their approach for their latest plan on an animated series, Arcane. The direction for the trailer was very interesting, in that we get to see different aspects of world building and the characters that are teased. So we come to an expectation of the series being in Netflix or any related platform to be viewed like Crunchyroll. They said that their priority for now is to finish other products. As of where will be series be aired/streamed, this we will have to wait for their updates on their social media.

With that, we briefly discussed the lore of the animation and a brief explanation was given to understand the whole reason of the project. They mentioned that it is very important to share their original IP towards players and fans especially in terms of the character’s lore. So, they decided to do a creative approach, namely building an entire different entertainment media for their consumers outside the game. Riot partnered up with Fortiche to create the amazing trailer that we got from the livestream and the Jinx MV. This creates a chance for Riot to have a good relationship with a company that can ensure quality.

Putting the animated series aside, we start discussing the League of Legends scene in the regions that they cover. They mentioned that the key for all of their success is the huge community that is backing them in their game and events. Looking in the near future, they will be looking into maintaining the IP for a long run for each generation to enjoy. As for their events, they will be looking forward into plans to push more community-based events.

Coming to the main topic of League of Legends Wild Rift. There wasn’t a lot of information that was given but we did get some insights on how are they planning to push the game. They trust that for those who love their IP or core gameplay would definitely play the game. The core design for the overall gameplay would be designed based of the information they get from their database.

There are many competitors within the mobile market for MOBA games within the Southeast Asia region. Wild Rift will be entering the same market at a later stage. Mark ensures that they will take an interesting and meaningful approach to make sure that the engagements and the community responsiveness as well as the feedback loop be their main priority to push Wild Rift to the top of the market. With Wild Rift being a mobile and console exclusive, the port for a Nintendo Switch version cannot be confirmed.
