With all the effort on putting their blood, sweat and tears into the multiple esports events, we represent you the great person behind the scene, KOH YUNG TEK! He is the global business development manager for Eliphant as well as the co-creator for SEA Major.
We did a small interview session with him and he was pretty cool to share his wisdom to all of us.
At first we were entering the topic on the design and overall attractions for the event and Yung Tek highlights that they are this time around they are trying to create a more Japanese festive style theme. He also add on that they added more competitive titles like Brawlhalla and Samurai Showdown for their fighting games tournament to build more hype for the event!
The Southeast Asia region has been proactive for the esports scene over the pass 10 years, when we were on talking on the esport scenario, he mentioned that esports in the region is slowly growing as there are businesses that come out of it. Yung Tek also put the region in a scale of 1 out off 100 if it is in a scale of progression.
With a major success for this year’s, we were wondering if we could be on par with international gaming events, but Tek response otherwise. He says that Europeans have a more mature market but the Japan has the best ecosystem to support the esport ecosystem. Southeast Asian countries on the other hand needs more governmental and organized association’s support.
After that we talked about the history that GameStart has imprinted in Singapore. Since there is an announcement for GameStart having their last year, Yung Tek gave a smile and told us not to worry. He told us to deliver the message for you fans to know that they are not going to be gone. They are attempting to make it happen elsewhere, like in Malaysia for 2021. With that said Gamescom Asia will be happening soon and we are hoping to see them there, but he cut us off saying that the answer for them joining Gamescom Asia is still an unknown.
In Southeast Asia, the market for mobile gaming is very influential. We talked about how can the situation improve for the mobile gaming industry and how would this affect the audiences for the other gaming genres and platforms. Yung Tek emphasizes the importance of gaming in nature and not the platforms. He mentioned that the scene are defined differently by each person. Each platform, and each genre as of now can’t reach the level of the two giants in the industry, League of Legends and DOTA 2. Mobile Legend: Bang Bang can be massive in the Southeast Asia region, but it is not the case globally.
In terms of game genre, Yung Tek says that the team will continue pursue creating tournaments for mainly fighting games. This is because they believe that it is not fair for them to approach a market that they are not well involved with. To him and the team, their passions remained highly on only fighting games and there is no need to interrupt the market for the other genres.
Eliphant made a great event for both SEA MAJOR and GameStart. We jumped into the topic discussing events in Singapore and a whole lot more on the fighting scene tournaments internationally. To our surprise, Yung Tek and his team has been working with since 2011 has been assisting CAPCOM and Razer to co-found the CAPCOM Pro Tour back in 2013! They even helped to create events like Rev Major in the Philippines, Tekken Tokyo Master in Japan and Korea Tekken Masters in Korea. He and his team will not stop and continue the support for the esports industry for both the global and Southeast Asia region.
Esports is a niche market for the major and a lot of the people out there wants a part within this industry. From experience, Yung Tek welcomes everyone to join the industry with a clear mind that there might or might not be money involved even if you gotten a part in it. Esports has a past where events run on a lost or just barely break even, I guess we all will have to make do if we were to make a jump into this fresh industry in Southeast Asia.
He also showed his appreciation towards the publishers, staffs, crew, sponsors, the community, pro players and everyone that support them either on stream or coming to the event or even just spreading the event.
With that said our interview with him, comes to an end. We hope that Eliphant will continue creating great events in the future. Make sure you check out our coverage on SEA MAJOR and GameStart Asia. We will do our best and bring you all the news that we’ve got in our hands!
