ASUS ROG has announced a whole new lineup of 9th gen gaming laptop during the recent Computex 2019, which includes the new Strix G that will be arriving in Malaysia very soon. We got the chance to try out the new laptop beforehand so without further ado, here is our ROG Strix G review where we will be looking at its design and how well it fares with the popular PC games.
The Design and Display
The Strix G features an eye-catching design, blending in the ROG Face Off Concept inspired by their collaboration with BMW Designworks Group. Combining the classic ROG aesthetic with a stealthy vibe, it comes with contrasting brushed finishes across the lid, as well as raised ridges that look like gills across the back and down the right side. The scissor door hinges allow more room for extra ventilation too.
Of course, it wouldn’t be ROG without RGB. There is an optional RGB light bar wrapping around the machine’s front and side edges, which you could customizable the colours and effects via Armoury Crate. The keyboard is also illuminated with LEDs, while the WASD keys come in transparent caps.
The review model we get (G531GU) is having a 15-inch display. Thanks to the super-narrow bezels, the 144Hz display actually offers over 80% screen-to-body ratio, which means you can enjoy games and entertainment in an expansive view. Its rapid refresh rate promises silky smooth graphics at high FPS as well.
The Performance
ROG Strix G is capable of handling multitasking and switching between serious gaming and production activity at ease, as it features the latest 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H processor and 8GB RAM. It also equips the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti graphics, so you can expect stunning, immersive visuals on this machine.
Talking about its cooling systems, the 3D Flow Zone at the rear and Dual N-Blade fans increase airflow to ensure efficient cooling performance. The ultra-thin fins expand the surface area for faster heat dissipation too. You can switch between Silent, Balanced and Turbo modes to optimize performance for different games or applications.
We tried out the machine with a few popular PC games such as Apex Legends, Final Fantasy XV and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. The performance is what we expected – the games run silky smooth at around 60 FPS (sometimes drops to 40+ FPS during gunfights), we didn’t encounter any lags so far.
