We mentioned last week that Square Enix planned to release a Dragon Quest mobile game. Well, here it is! Dragon Quest Walk has just been announced for Android and iOS. The launch date expected to be within this year.
Dragon Quest Walk is an AR RPG (Augmented Reality Role Playing Game) that turns the world around you into a Dragon Quest adventure. It’s similar to Pokemon Go in that it uses your phone’s GPS to build an in-game map for you. Basically, your surroundings will be displayed as a typical Dragon Quest environment on the screen.
In this map, you get to walk around to look for items and monster encounters. The combat is turn-based and the monsters are all from the Dragon Quest series. It is also worth noting that key landmarks in the real world may become story or quest markers in the game.
The home feature is another neat little mechanic. It lets you designate a location such as your house as a ‘home’, which then becomes an in-game home that you can upgrade and decorate as you like.
We still don’t know any exact launch details, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates on the game. In the meantime, you can view the full post-stream video here.
Update: There’s now an official website where you can check out some of the game’s features. You can also apply for the closed beta test. However, the test is limited to people living in Japan’s Kanto region.
