Rivalry isn’t stopping Sony and Microsoft from partnering up to develop cloud-based gaming and AI solutions. The goal of the partnership is to create solutions that can enhance the customer experiences on the two companies’ respective platforms.
The two companies will also look for ways to leverage Microsoft’s Azure data center solutions to improve on Sony’s streaming services. Aside from that, both companies have said that there will be increased efforts in improving the existing platforms for content creators.
Part of the agreement includes joint development of new semiconductors and supporting AI. Specifically, the two companies will be looking at building “new intelligent image sensor solutions”. Using Sony’s image sensors with Microsoft’s Azure AI technology, the two companies want to provide improved capabilities for enterprise customers. Sony and Microsoft also want to integrate Microsoft’s AI platform and tools into Sony’s consumer products, in order to deliver “highly intuitive and user-friendly AI experiences”.
At the signing of the agreement, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said:
“PlayStation itself came about through the integration of creativity and technology. Our mission is to seamlessly evolve this platform as one that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere.”
Adding to that, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had this to say:
“Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation. Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.”
No specific details on have been disclosed but the two companies have promised to share more information as it becomes available.
