Official sneak peak of PlayStation 5 revealed – Supporting 8K, ray-tracing and SSD

During a recent interview with Mark Cerny, the Lead System Architect of the PS4 has finally told us some details about Sony’s next-gen console aka PlayStation 5. It will feature a more powerful CPU based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen series. While on the GPU, it will have a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family that supports ray-tracing and 8K visuals.

The AMD chip will also include a custom unit for 3D audio to deliver unprecedented audio effects. Current PSVR headset will be compatible with the new console too. Other than these, the next-gen console features an SSD that drastically increase the loading speed! For example, PS4 Pro takes 15 seconds to perform a fast-travel action in Marvel’s Spider-Man, while the new console only takes 0.8 seconds to do the same thing.

As the new-gen console is based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will be backwards-compatible with PS4 games. It will accept both physical and digital media too. However, it is confirmed that the new console won’t be released anytime in 2019.
