Microsoft’s studio spending spree continues with their latest acquisitions, Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment. Microsoft announced the deals yesterday at X018.
Both of the new acquisitions are some of Microsoft’s more notable ones. Obsidian Entertainment developed popular titles such as Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth and the Pillars of Eternity series. On the other hand, inXile Entertainment developed Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera.
Both studios join a large list of Microsoft’s recently acquired video game companies. Microsoft had recently announced in June that it had acquired four studios. They are Undead Labs (State of Decay), Ninja Theory (Hellblade), Playground Games (Forza Horizion) and Compulsion Games (We Happy Few). Additionally, Microsoft is already housing some of the more notable video game companies including 343 Industries (Halo series) and Mojang (Minecraft). Furthermore, Microsoft announced an all-new studio name The Initiative. The studio is headed by Darrel Gallagher, the ex-chief of Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider reboot).
The Xbox One faced heavy criticism for not having enough exclusive games. Due to this, the console lost out to its rival, the Playstation 4. The acquisition of these studios are clearly Microsoft’s attempt to answer to these criticisms.
Obsidian and inXile released videos stating their reasons behind accepting the deal from Microsoft. You can watch them below.
