We got the MSI G63 in our office for review but we couldn’t let it go when it was time for us to part. It was one of those laptops that we fell in love with as it’s super light compared to other commercial gaming laptops at 1.86kg. At such a weight, we were able to bring it around and game basically anywhere without breaking our backs. Yes it’s light and thin, but that doesn’t stop it from giving us that top notch gaming experience through its 15.6″ display with thin bezels alongside.
The Bold, The Beautiful
The MSI GF63 is pretty in its own way. From the looks and the touch of it, it does feel premium as the front panel has an aluminium brush finish. The deck is also made out of aluminium which feels neat, however everything else is made of plastic. With its signature logo slapped on the front panel in red stylishly, our only grumble is that the logo does not glow… Otherwise it looks great!
Some may say that the MSI GF63 looks pretty much like the GS65 Stealth Thin but does it matter? The design works and it looks smooth and slim which is what MSI is going for. Busting out that 82% screen-to-body ratio with bezels of just 4.9mm, we’re able to enjoy that 15.6″ display binge watching movies or playing our usual games.
Just like the GS65, the layout is pretty much the same as well as the keyboard and trackpad locations. However the GF63 has a more stylish design where a stream of red lining is present on each cap of the keyboard – which also lights up as well. Unfortunately, no RGB customizations. Most importantly, it comes with 3 USB ports and a HDMI port as well that’s located neatly at the back. There’s also a USB-C port which can come in handy like another charging port option for your laptop.
Performance
Like most gaming laptops, this one of course is equipped with Intel’s latest chips. Equipped with Intel’s i7-8750H with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050, we are able to play the games we love like Overwatch, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Far Cry 5 and Final Fantasy XV. We are even surprised that the GF63 was able to dissipate all the heat while we were gaming, keeping the temperature below 90 degree Celsius. With only 1 single fan and 3 heat pipes, the GF63 did well on keeping the laptop cool and running high performance.
Also, thanks to the MSI’s built-in Dragon Center, you can always bring it up to check on your system performances. There, you can also customize the settings of your fan and your power plan to give you the best gaming performance and experience you look out for.
And if you’re tired of playing the PC games when you’re on a losing streak, it’s always best to take a break from them and just play mobile games! But wait, you don’t really have to play your mobile games on your mobile. Yes, there’s emulators but you don’t have to download a separate emulator for that! The MSI GF63 also comes with the MSI App Player where you can play your favorite mobile games on it without having to whip your phone out. That’s not all, if your phone is old and under-performing; not enabling you to play those high-end mobile games, the MSI App Player is where it’s handy.
Verdict
Overall, the MSI GF63 is a great budget gaming laptop which is light but can still do all the heavy lifting of gaming. It’s light because it’s a laptop, so that means you can bring it anywhere you like and have a go at gaming at any spot you like. Sure, you’d probably need a power socket to power you through gaming. But if you are just using it for casual work, it can last you over 6 hours of solid use before you need to charge it.
For a price of RM 4,399, the MSI GF63 fulfills its purpose as a budget gaming laptop with the Nvidia 1050. Though this is not the 1050Ti version, it is still capable of playing those highly competitive games like Overwatch, Dota 2, CS:GO and more. So if you are interested and on a tight budget, this is a go-to gaming laptop that we’d recommend for your gaming needs.
