Most of us had probably seen it coming ever since PUBG Corp sued Netease over copyright infringement on two of their games, Rules of Survival and Knives Out, back in early April 2018. Now with the massive burst of battle royale games on both PC and mobile platforms, PUBG Corp has finally filed a lawsuit against Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite. The lawsuit is of course on the similarities between Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode and PUBG’s.
“When “Fortnite” was first launched, the game only had the “Save the World” mode, at which gamers build walls and defended it. But in September, the firm added the free-to-play “Battle Royale” portion into the game, provoking a plagiarism controversy and allegations that it copied “Battlegrounds” items and user interface (UI).” – Korea Times
As some of you might prefer one over the other, both of these games are of the same genre – a battle royale shooter game but with a slight twist. In Fortnite, you can build your own fort which either protects you or get on better foothold over your opponents. This of course was not part of the lawsuit because PUBG does not have that feature in their game. PUBG is more focused on realism while Fortnite is not if we’re also comparing their graphics. However because both games follow the same battle royale format where players start off paragliding down to battle and run as a storm approaches from the outskirts of the map to force players into a smaller circle, in the end only 1 survives out of the 99 others.
For now, the details of the court proceedings are not revealed yet. With the two big battle royale games that are heading against each other, we do not know what the results would be since PUBG used to work closely with Epic Games because of the Unreal Engine 4 license give to PUBG Corp back then.
