Microsoft has initiated a new wave of workforce layoffs affecting multiple divisions within the company, including its security, sales, and gaming sectors, Business Insider reports.
While a Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged the layoffs, they indicated that the impact would be relatively limited in scope, though specific numbers were not disclosed. These reductions are distinct from the company’s recent performance-based cuts implemented last week, which affected less than 1% of Microsoft’s 228,000-strong workforce as of June 2024, according to CNBC.
“At Microsoft we focus on high-performance talent,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC. “We are always working on helping people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take the appropriate action.”
Addressing the performance-related separations, a Microsoft spokesperson stated, “At Microsoft we focus on high-performance talent. We are always working on helping people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take the appropriate action.”
This development follows significant staffing changes in Microsoft’s gaming division over the past year. In January, Xbox chief Phil Spencer announced the elimination of 1,900 positions across Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, and Xbox, citing industry growth challenges as the primary factor. Additionally, the company’s gaming division underwent another reduction of 650 positions in September.
These latest layoffs from Microsoft continue a pattern of workforce adjustments at the technology giant, as it navigates evolving market conditions and organizational requirements.
