The Hong Kong Comics Support Programme (HKCSP) marked its third consecutive year at Comic Fiesta 2024 with a celebratory opening ceremony held on December 21 at Malaysia’s largest comic exhibition. The event showcased an expanded roster of 17 talented Hong Kong comic creators, up from last year’s 15, selected from a competitive pool of 85 applicants.
During the opening ceremony, HKCAF Vice President Alan Wan expressed a deep connection to the event, noting that returning to Comic Fiesta “really feels like coming home.” He emphasized the programme’s success in both discovering new talent and making Hong Kong comics more accessible through translations into Malay and English.
Libera Cheng, Director-General of HKETO Jakarta, highlighted the cultural significance of comics during her address. “Comics are more than just illustrations or artistic techniques; they are vessels of culture and information,” she stated while introducing the diverse collection of works, which range from black and white illustrations to Japanese-inspired artwork and vibrant color pieces.
The selected creators include notable industry figures such as Ho Chi Man and Wong Shui Pan, alongside this year’s HKCSP award winners So Chun Man (Pen So), recipient of the “Gold Award” and “Best Comic Story Award,” and Cheng Siu Hin (HIN), who secured the “Silver Award.”
The Hong Kong Comics opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including Ms. Hoh Jee Eng, Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in Malaysia Office, and Mr. Lau Shaw Ming, Chairman of Comicker Union of Malaysia, marking another milestone in the cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Malaysia.
