Bandai Namco made a bold statement at The Game Awards 2024 with Shadow Labyrinth, a surprising and gritty spin on the iconic Pac-Man series. Set in a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi world, this 2D action platformer introduces Metroidvania-style gameplay, where players navigate treacherous environments alongside the yellow orb, PUCK, and a mysterious robed figure.
In this reimagined world, players take on the role of either the robed figure or Pac-Man’s new floating companion, PUCK, exploring dangerous settings that range from barren wastelands and icy caverns to lava-filled depths. Special moves and grappling mechanics are essential as players tackle tricky obstacles and face off against deadly monsters. While the narrative remains intentionally vague, the trailer hints at a deeper, horror-infused story, with Pac-Man seemingly using PUCK to escape the labyrinth.
According to IGN, Shadow Labyrinth has been in development for four years, with a team including Tekken’s Katsuhiro Harada drawing inspiration from Bandai Namco’s rich arcade history. The game combines Metroidvania gameplay with familiar Pac-Man elements, offering a thrilling and unexpected experience for fans. This bold new direction for the classic character is sure to excite both long-time Pac-Man enthusiasts and newcomers seeking a unique challenge.
