Set in a fantasy-inspired Southeast Asian world, the game follows two ambitious young chefs on their quest to uncover long-lost culinary secrets. While it may draw initial comparisons to existing coop cooking games, SEDAP! distinguishes itself by incorporating exploration and hunting mechanics alongside traditional kitchen gameplay.

Characters and Role Specialization

Players can choose between two distinct characters, each bringing unique strengths to the kitchen and wilderness. Chef Som excels in culinary tasks with superior cooking speed but suffers from low health, making exploration and combat particularly challenging. This vulnerability forces players to think strategically about when to send Som into potentially dangerous situations.

Hunter Gon, while slower in the kitchen, provides combat prowess and enhanced durability for dealing with the island’s creatures. His cooking efficiency requires more clicks to complete dishes, but his survivability makes him invaluable for gathering ingredients in hostile areas. In single-player mode, an intelligent character-switching system allows seamless transitions between the two, adapting to current task requirements. This system proves particularly useful when juggling multiple orders while needing to gather fresh ingredients.

Gameplay Mechanics

The demo, featuring seven comprehensive levels, introduces players to the complete gameplay loop through a well-designed progression system. A thorough tutorial covers basic mechanics from ingredient handling to cooking techniques, ensuring players understand the nuances of food preparation. Orders come with a dual-state progress bar system – cyan and orange – adding urgency to meal preparation. The cyan bar represents optimal completion time for achieving three stars, while the orange bar indicates the absolute deadline.

Som’s cooking involves a precise timing mechanic where players must hit yellow segments on the progress bar, adding an extra layer of skill to food preparation. Gon’s slower cooking speed requires more clicks to complete dishes, creating an interesting trade-off between character choices. The challenge progressively increases as players advance through levels, introducing more complex recipes and tighter time constraints.

A notable feature is the dynamic split-screen system, activating when Chef Som and Hunter Gon distance themselves from each other. While effective for visibility, the constant screen adjustments during exploration can be disorienting for some players. The system requires adaptation during extended play sessions, particularly in single-player mode when managing both characters across the open map.

Unlike traditional cooking games, SEDAP! extends beyond kitchen walls into a vibrant, interactive environment. Players must explore the island to gather ingredients, from hunting chickens to harvesting pineapples and ginger. The environment houses various creatures, each with unique behaviors and challenges. The formidable Pineapple Turtle stands out as a particularly challenging opponent, requiring multiple hits to defeat and possessing the ability to counterattack.

This combat aspect adds a layer of resource management – players must weigh the time spent fighting against the urgency of pending orders. However, slow ingredient respawn rates can sometimes create delays in order fulfillment, particularly after failed attempts at preparing dishes. The exploration aspect encourages players to memorize ingredient locations and plan efficient gathering routes.

Southeast Asian Culinary Experience

The game showcases authentic Southeast Asian cuisine through various dishes including Pineapple Fried Rice, Mango Sticky Rice, Dan Bauk, and Sambal Kang Kong. Each recipe demands specific preparation steps that reflect real-world cooking processes, from proper ingredient preparation to cooking techniques. A thoughtful notification system alerts players when dishes near completion through visual and audio cues, helping manage multiple orders simultaneously. Adding to the challenge, ingredients feature a durability system – leave them out too long, and they’ll spoil, producing visible green smoke and requiring quick disposal. This mechanic encourages players to plan their prep work carefully and maintains a realistic approach to food handling.

Demo Availability and Future Plans

Players can experience SEDAP! during the Steam Cooking Fest from November 11-18, 2024. Currently, the game supports local co-op gameplay, with online multiplayer functionality planned for future updates. While the demo version shows great promise, there’s room for improvement in areas like combat difficulty balance and ingredient respawn rates.
