We had the opportunity to try out Dynasty Warriors: Origins at Tokyo Game Show 2024, and it’s clear that KOEI TECMO is taking the beloved franchise in an exciting new direction. The hands-on demo, though brief at about 15 minutes of gameplay, offered a tantalizing glimpse into the reimagined world of the Three Kingdoms.
The demo plunged us into the Battle of Sishui Gate, a pivotal moment familiar to fans of the series. But before the chaos of combat ensued, the game treated us to a strategic preparation phase This new addition allows players to choose their weapons and select a companion from one of the three main factions: Wei, Shu, or Wu. Options included iconic characters like Xiahou Dun, Guan Yu, and Sun Shangxiang, with the choice to go solo also available.
Once on the battlefield, it became immediately apparent that Dynasty Warriors: Origins is not your typical hack-and-slash affair. The game seamlessly blends strategy with action, introducing a dual-skill system that adds depth to the combat. The combat system has undergone a significant overhaul. A new parry mechanic adds a layer of defensive play that feels surprisingly at home in the Dynasty Warriors universe.
The duel system makes a return, offering intense one-on-one battles that can turn the tide of war if won. Health management has also seen changes, with a limited-use food system reminiscent of Souls-like games complementing the traditional method of breaking jars for restoration.
With its blend of exhilarating action, strategic depth, and a fresh perspective on the Three Kingdoms narrative, Dynasty Warriors: Origins appears to be shaping up as a promising evolution of the franchise.
