      We had the opportunity to interview Shinichi Tatsuke, the producer behind the highly anticipated remake of Romancing SaGa 2, now titled “Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven.” This remake breathes new life into the 1993 classic, promising to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Our discussion with Tatsuke-san shed light on the intricate balance between preserving the original’s essence and introducing modern elements to appeal to a wider audience.

      Balancing Challenge and Accessibility

      Tatsuke emphasized the team’s approach to maintaining the original game’s renowned difficulty while addressing aspects that were less player-friendly. The remake introduces visible enemy weaknesses and clearer glimmer mechanics, elements that were previously obscure. To cater to various skill levels, a difficulty option has been added, allowing both veterans seeking a challenge and newcomers to enjoy the experience.

      “We definitely wanted to retain the challenging element of the combat because we felt that there would definitely be some players that would want to experience that in this remake as well,” Tatsuke explained. “That being said, we do want to appeal this to the players or the modern players that are more experienced with the standard or traditional RPGs.”

      This balance is achieved through thoughtful design choices. For instance, enemy weaknesses, which were hidden in the original, are now clearly displayed. Tatsuke elaborated, “Even in the original installment, each and every enemy or monster had their own weaknesses, but these weren’t always disclosed or very visible to the players back then. On top of that, the glimmers as well.”

      The addition of difficulty options also marks a significant departure from the original, allowing players to tailor their experience. Tatsuke stressed that this doesn’t dilute the game’s essence but rather makes it more accessible, ensuring that players can enjoy the rich narrative and unique systems without feeling overwhelmed by difficulty.

      Unique Gameplay Mechanics

      The heart of Romancing SaGa 2’s appeal lies in its innovative inheritance system. Players control multiple protagonists across generations, a feature Tatsuke believes remains unique even by today’s standards. The remake retains this core element while modernizing growth and battle systems to suit contemporary players.

      Tatsuke passionately described this system: “In typical standard RPGs, you would play as the single protagonist and follow their life throughout the game. However, in Romancing SaGa 2, you would have multiple protagonists spanning from generation to generation because your antagonist, the seven heroes, are just too strong.”

      To prevent overwhelming new players, the game introduces mechanics gradually, starting with smaller party sizes and incorporating detailed tutorials—a stark contrast to the original’s sink-or-swim approach. “We made sure that the system walked through them little by little so that they have some time and they have the opportunity to just take it in, slowly but surely,” Tatsuke noted.

      The inheritance system has been refined to offer even more depth and strategic options. Players will find that decisions made in one generation can have far-reaching consequences in future generations, adding layers of complexity to long-term planning.

      Graphical Overhaul and Storytelling

      Transitioning from 2D to 3D presented its own set of challenges. The team had to reimagine certain elements, such as dialogue presentation and battle pacing, to feel natural in a 3D environment. This involved adding more visuals, text, and performances to create a complete picture for modern audiences.

      Tatsuke provided insight into this process: “When we play 2D games, we unconsciously fill in the gaps in our head. But if we were to turn the 2D pixel graphics into 3D, it’s crucial to actually fill in the gaps by presenting more visuals and more text. And then add more performances and add more dialogues, just so that it presents a complete picture for the modern players by this 3D graphics.”

      The battle system also saw significant changes to accommodate the shift to 3D. “In the original release, you would have your five-character party, and you choose each action you want your party characters to take. But while you’re making that selection for your character, for one of those characters, you have the other four just standing in the middle of battle, just waiting for the player,” Tatsuke explained.

      “So in this remake, during the battle, if you choose the action of your character, they would take that action immediately,” he added.

      Attracting New Players

      Tatsuke believes the inheritance system and the glimmer mechanic for learning new abilities will be key in attracting newcomers. Unlike traditional skill trees, the glimmer system allows players to obtain new techniques and spells organically through gameplay, offering a unique progression experience.

      “I think it really feels nice for players to witness this during their actual gameplay because in most games or in most RPGs players would have to follow a skill board or a skill tree to unlock each new ability,” said Tatsuke.

      The glimmer system in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven has been further refined in the remake to provide a more satisfying and intuitive experience. Players will find that the rate at which they discover new abilities is more consistently paced, ensuring a steady sense of progression throughout the game. The visual and audio cues for when a glimmer occurs have been enhanced, making these moments of discovery more exciting and rewarding.

      “But the Glimmer system, as you know, is very different from that where players will just get to obtain these new techniques and new spells. So I think that’s very unique and something that only the Romancing SaGa series can offer,” he added.

      Evolving Gameplay Systems

      The remake introduces several new features alongside returning favorites. A new ability system encourages players to use diverse party compositions, as abilities learned by one character can be shared with others. Additionally, battles against the seven heroes now involve targeting specific body parts, adding a new layer of strategy.

      Tatsuke elaborated on the new ability system: “For this remake, we have this new system called the ability system. It rewards the players to use a lot of different types of characters for their parties because the more characters they use, the more abilities they learn. When you learn an ability, you can actually make other characters use that ability, too.”

      While the core narrative remains the same—defeating the seven heroes—players have the freedom to choose the order in which they tackle these encounters and how they expand their empire, ensuring a personalized experience despite a singular ending. “While the results that they’re going to follow is going to be the same for all players, which is defeating all of the seven heroes, in between that is going to differ between the players because, again, that’s all up to their choices,” Tatsuke clarified.

      As the release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven approaches, it’s clear that the development team has poured considerable effort into crafting a remake that honors its roots while pushing the boundaries of what made the original a cult classic. Both returning fans and newcomers to the series have much to look forward to in this reimagined journey through generations of heroes.
