In an exclusive interview, XD the team behind the mobile and PC tactical RPG Sword of Convallaria recently shared developer insights into the game’s reception, design philosophy, and future plans.
Within just a week of launch, the game “surpassed 5 million downloads worldwide, which is a remarkable achievement for a new title,” according to the developers. They emphasized the importance of player engagement, noting that “players are actively engaging with the game, sharing their experiences and suggestions, which the development team is keenly listening to and addressing.”
One of the game’s unique features is its multiple endings, particularly in the Spiral of Destinies storyline. The developers intentionally designed these endings without a “canon” conclusion, as they wanted to “leave the story open-ended and player-driven.” However, the developers observed that “players have gravitated towards certain endings, with the ‘Salvation’ ending being particularly favoured” due to its “emotional depth and narrative complexity.”
Global Version, Monetization, and Future
Regarding the game’s global version, the team stated that they “will adjust the content of the global version, not strictly following the pacing of other regions, to provide overseas players with a content experience that better suits their gaming habits.”
The developers also addressed the absence of English voice-overs, explaining that “they made the decision to preserve the game’s original cultural and artistic identity.”
When discussing the game’s class system, the team provided insights into the unique dynamic between Watchers and Destroyers. They explained that this design “creates both a small and large counter cycle, with the small cycle being the interplay between [Breaker], [Defender], and [Seeker], and the larger cycle including the interaction between [Destroyer] and [Watcher].” This approach, they said, “challenges players to think more critically about their tactics and adapt to different combat scenarios.”
The developers stated that “players can greatly influence the outcome of battles through sound pre-battle and in-battle strategies,” and that “players can obtain all character, equipment, and resource collection and development in the game completely for free.” The developers designed the game to allow players to make significant progress without spending money.
Looking ahead, the Sword of Convallaria mentioned more developer insights and plans to “release more side stories for everyone to experience in the future,” demonstrating their commitment to expanding the game’s narrative content based on player feedback.
