id Software has announced the release of DOOM + DOOM II, a comprehensive collection that combines the first two iconic DOOM games along with a wealth of additional content. Available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam, GOG, and the Microsoft Store, the package is priced at $9.99. Notably, existing owners will receive this enhanced collection as a free upgrade.
The collection includes the original games, both of which were groundbreaking titles that helped establish and popularize the first-person shooter genre in the early 1990s. In addition to these classic games, the package features several expansion packs and additional content, including TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living, and Sigil. In total, the game boasts an impressive 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps.
Furthermore, the re-release introduces several new enhancements to modernize the classic games. Players can now enjoy online, cross-platform deathmatch and cooperative play for up to 16 players. The collection offers a choice between the original midi soundtracks and modern IDKFA versions by Andrew Hulshult, including new recordings for DOOM II.
The KEX engine now runs DOOM + DOOM II and features BOOM source compatibility, which allows the game to publish hundreds of community-created mods from the past 25 years. The re-releases have retained existing enhancements such as upgraded visuals, modern controller support, a weapon carousel for faster switching, gyroscopic aiming on select platforms, improved mouse and keyboard controls, and local split-screen multiplayer.
