Wizards of the Coast has announced the release of “Bloomburrow,” the latest set for the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering (MTG), launching on August 2, 2024. This new set marks a significant milestone as MTG’s first entirely non-human plane, featuring a cast of small animal characters in a fantastical woodland setting.
Bloomburrow introduces players to Valley, a pastoral realm where miniature creatures wield magic and weapons to defend their homeland against the threat of Calamity Beasts. The set’s narrative follows Mabel, a courageous mouse, and her diverse group of animal companions as they strive to restore peace to their world.
The new set brings several innovative mechanics to the game, including:
Offspring: A keyword allowing players to create smaller token copies of creature cards.
Gift: A mechanic that provides advantages in exchange for granting benefits to opponents.
Forage: An action enabling players to utilize their graveyard or food tokens for various effects.
Valiant: A keyword granting bonuses when creatures are targeted by spells or abilities.
Expend: A rule tracking mana usage to trigger additional effects.
Collectors can look forward to 24 reimagined planeswalker cards featuring popular characters like Jace and Liliana in animal form. Bloomburrow offers unique collectibles, such as 42 Showcase Woodland frame cards and full-art basic land cards depicting Valley’s changing seasons. Moreover, the legendary land card “Three Tree City” is available with four distinct seasonal illustrations.
To celebrate the release, Wizards of the Coast (SEA) is launching “Play Season” in select Southeast Asian countries, running from August 2 to October 31. Additionally, this initiative, starting with “Mabel’s Journey,” encourages players to visit local Wizards Play Network stores for special in-store activities and exclusive collectibles.
Bloomburrow promises to deliver a fresh and charming experience for Magic: The Gathering players, blending familiar elements with new, animal-themed twists in both gameplay and aesthetics.
