Bungie has confirmed the layoff of approximately 220 staff, accounting for about 17% of its workforce. This decision comes amidst rising development costs and broader economic challenges.
In addition to these layoffs, 155 employees will transition to roles within Sony Interactive Entertainment. They are also currently working on a new sci-fi PvP extraction shooter titled Marathon. Check out the announcement trailer for the game below.
Bungie’s CEO, Pete Parsons, cited the need to make substantial changes to the company’s cost structure and to refocus development efforts primarily on Destiny and Marathon. This restructuring aims to address financial overreach and to adapt to the current economic climate. The full post can be found on their official website.
This morning, I’m sharing with all of you some of the most difficult changes we’ve ever had to make as a studio. Due to rising costs of development and industry shifts as well as enduring economic conditions, it has become clear that we need to make substantial changes to our cost structure and focus development efforts entirely on Destiny and Marathon. – Pete Parsons, CEO of Bungie
“Today is a difficult and painful day, especially for our departing colleagues, all of which have made important and valuable contributions to Bungie,” said Parsons. He has also mentioned that the departing staff will receive an exit package, including severance, bonus and health coverage.
These layoffs follow Bungie’s initial round of cuts late last year, when 100 employees were let go in October amid a delay of the Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion. It was released on June 5, 2024 but despite its success Bungie has made the decision for the layoff.
